The research on workflow management seems to involve not only human participants, but also software systems. Systems are able to initiate and terminate by themselves. In contrast, participants in CSCW are human users who may be assisted by computer systems, not the software participants. In a workflow model, participants, whether humans or software, are represented as nodes and the flow of work as edges. The flow of work includes the flow of data and the flow of control. WebWork (Miller et al, 1997) is an example of web-based workflow management system.

At present, it is not clear if the business model of a manufacturing enterprise needs to be changed when the digital e-business approach is adopted. ” Indeed, many e-business software systems do require certain changes in business operations, that is the ways that we work. This has proven the hardest in introducing and implementing any new technologies or initiatives, no matter how potentially promising they are. Digital enterprise is no exception.
